Believe it or not, the first marijuana concentrates were created over a thousand years ago. Hashish, as it’s described in the text 1001 Arabian Nights, was created by rubbing the marijuana flower between your fingers to isolate trichomes (or the very tiny mushroom-shaped hairs that give bud its frosty appearance) in a little ball, which was typically eaten. Hash permeated through the Middle East, particularly in Sufism, in which it was used to get closer to God. In fact, historians believe a poet from the 13th century AD wrote these words about hashish:
It found its place, too, in Europe – but for medicinal reasons. William B. O?Shaughnessy, an Irish physician practicing in India, is now considered a pioneer in medical marijuana research. He found the use of the plant and its form as hashish was a successful anticonvulsant, anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea aid.
Dry sift and ice water, as you can guess from the names, are vastly different extraction methods.
In the case of dry sift rosin, dried and cured cannabis flower is sifted on mesh sieves to break off the trichomes. These trichomes are sifted through mesh screens that cascade down in size to further isolate the mushroom shaped hairs ? because the trichomes are removed from dry flower, there?s a high chance of bringing unwanted plant material (think of trying to remove a sticker from a piece of paper ? it’s hard to not bring paper with it). After the trichomes are removed, they are pressed using only heat and pressure to produce a malleable texture similar to slightly dry cookie dough.
